Two tamariki with thumbs up

Providing a sports mentoring programme

Hoa Motuhake Sports Trust provides a sports mentoring programme for tamariki aged 8–12 years who are at risk, in high-deprivation circumstances, and in care. For us at Hoa Motuhake, building healthy, connected communities through sport is more than a belief; it’s a plan of action.

Cultural competency and equity self-review

Te Kawenta Tamariki o Waitaha requires listening to tamariki and meeting their expectations. Our self-review involves a lot of listening and learning (mainly listening). We listen and play more than we talk. Our wins are defined by Te Kawenta.

We pride ourselves on delivering tamariki-inspired interventions. Breaking cycles of trauma and adversity through sport is also about sharing the results. We know when we’re winning because tamariki tell us. And we know when we can do better because tamariki tell us. We take time to walk beside them and hear their stories. We build relationships, and we have checks and balances, which include the voices of tamariki.

Confidence and commitment

Te Kawenta Tamariki o Waitaha gives us the confidence to realise our vision. We evaluate with tamariki in mind, and include them in decision-making. We are learning and improving the delivery of life-changing experiences.

Tamariki benefit from sports interventions. Their feedback and our waitlist are evidence. Signing up to Te Kawenta Tamariki o Waitaha is a win-win. We intend to rise to their expectations. We have the team and the commitment.
